Maintenance of Mechanical Ventilation and Central Air-conditioning Systems

Mechanical Ventilation (MV) and Air Conditioning (A/C) systems are complex mechanical systems.

MV is used to introduce fresh outside air into buildings, circulate air within buildings and, remove odours and moisture in buildings. Air conditioning (A/C) on the other hand conditions/alters the properties of air to provide indoor environments conducive to human comfort and production processes therein.

MV and AC systems must be maintained to ensure proper functioning. Poor indoor air quality caused by maintenance neglect can affect the health and productivity of workers; inability of the systems to perform optimally will also mean higher energy bills.

The course will provide working knowledge and an understanding of the following aspects of MV and AC systems and, system performance and maintenance:

  • System Fundaments & Environmental Comfort
  • Types of Systems and Working Principles
  • System Components and Life Spans
  • Maintenance Requirements: Regulatory & Routine

1.  Mechanical Ventilation Systems

  • Functional Overview of System
  •  Types of MV Systems and How They Work
  • Typical Components of Systems
  • Regulations on Installation: Car Parks, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Smoke Stops, Fire-Fighting Lobbies, Exit Staircases
  • Component Life Spans & Maintenance Requirements

2.  Air Conditioning Systems

  • Functional Overview of System
  • Types of AC Systems and How They Work
  • Central AC Systems:  Air Cooled Systems(Components, Working Principles & Energy Issues), Water Cooled Systems(Components, Working Principles & Energy Issues)
  • Component Life Spans & Maintenance Requirements
