CERAMIC AND NATURAL
STONE
FACADES AND FLOORS
Design, Installation & Maintenance |
PE Board Accredited: 7 PDUs
COURSE BACKGROUND
An extensive range of ceramic and natural stones tiles with large
variations in performance and designs is available today. Due to
their durability, maintainability and aesthetic properties, they
are widely used as finishes to walls and floors. Defects ranging
from efflorescence to de-lamination are however common, many of
them have led to litigations.
A tiled surface is a complex building system comprising the tile
proper, bonded by adhesive/mortar to the underlying substrate. Each
layer has an important contribution towards the end quality and
performance of the finished surface. Sound knowledge of the properties
of tiles is required for the selection, design, installation and
maintenance of tiles. Regular follow-up inspections are necessary
throughout their lifespan to monitor performance and execute timely
repairs.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
A life-cycle approach will be adopted to provide knowledge on:
- Types of Tiles and Specific Performances to Enable an Informed
Choice of Tiles
- Design Principles and Detailing of Tiled Surfaces for Differential
Movements
- Installation Technologies and Their Influence on Quality and
Durability of the
Tiled Surface
- Maintenance Requirements to Ensure Performance and Lifespan
- Common Defects, Causes, Diagnostics and Repair Methods
- A Standardised System to Provide Uniformity in Inspections and
Defects Assessment.
